Sad news (Erotokritos)

Extract from the poem ‘Erotokritos’ by Vincenzo Cornaro written in vernacular Cretan dialect and set to music. It is a novel-ballad comprising 1012 lines and one of the most significant Cretan literary works of the Venetian period.

Dear Aretousa, have you heard

the sad (news)?

Your father is sending me away

an exile in a foreign land.

All he’s given me

is four days (to get ready)

and then leave.

I’m going so very far away.

How can I (get away from you)?

How can I leave you behind?

How can I live without you

when (separated)?

I know that your (father)

is soon to give you away as a bride

to a (Prince), a fine lad

equal to your standing.

And you cannot resist.

‘T is what your (parents) wish.

They overrule your own will.

They change your own wish.

All I am asking from you, (mistress)

The only thing I want

and then (joyfully),

I’ll end my life,

at the betrothal

let out a (deep sigh).

When you are putting on your wedding dress,

when you change as a married woman…
